Clinton is a village in the southwest corner of Summit County, Ohio. The population was 1,337 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Clinton is home to The Ohio Veterans’ Memorial Park honoring Ohio’s military heroes in Vietnam and other wars. It consists of many monuments honoring our Heroes. The flag-ship of the park is the 125-ft long Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Wall which contains names of the 3,095 Ohioans who gave their lives in service to our nation during the Vietnam War. It is the longest free-standing monument in the nation being held in place only by its own weight. The west side of the wall is engraved with all of the conflicts that Ohio has been involved with since the War of 1812. All of the photos on this section of the wall were engraved with actual photos of the wars, with the exception of the War of 1812. This side of the wall also contains the names of Ohio’s Heroes since the Bombing of Beirut.
Clinton was formerly known as Warwick and that name is still used for the rail junction. The village was laid out in 1816 accelerating with the arrival of the Ohio and Erie Canal. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880’s put the canal, which was in need of costly repairs, out of business, with a major flood in 1913 requiring the remaining canal locks be destroyed.
The Ohio-Erie Towpath Canal Towpath, which is part of the Summit County Metro Parks system, is right in your backyard. The towpath is well-maintained and connects Clinton to other communities north and south. It’s a great way to meet fellow “Clintonians” as well as neighbors from surrounding areas.
The Village of Clinton is rich in canal-era history. A visit to the Clinton Historical Society web site will provide a fascinating guide to “what was” as well as pointing out houses and structures that still exist from those by-gone days.
Part of the charm of a “bedroom community” like Clinton is that you don’t have to put up with the noise and congestion that larger communities but have but yet have convenient shopping and restaurants as close as 3-5 miles in Canal Fulton and Barberton, as well as larger metropolitan areas of Akron and Canton within 15 miles.
Clinton is within three miles of the Canal Fulton Public Library. Clinton contracts policing services with the adjoining City of New Franklin. The Clinton Village fire department has proudly served the village over the years and operates two facilities including a paramedic station jointly operated with New Franklin.
